what can i do?

In order to help our students with epilepsy, we must ask some important and hard questions. Here is where you can find the answers.

Read our acknowledgments/disclaimers regarding personal information.

Teachers & paraprofessionals

As teachers and paraprofessionals, you're interacting with students more than anyone else — in the classroom, on the playground, in the cafeteria.

It's important to know how to recognize when a student is having a seizure and the proper steps to take when that happens. All teachers and paraprofessionals should have a conference with the parents to go over a student's seizure action plan to ensure the safety of the student.

school nurses

School nurses are the first line of defense in ensuring the safety of students with epilepsy.

The school nurse is responsible for keeping strict adherence to a student's seizure action plan and follow through with what the student's physician has detailed for them, including medication schedules and possible emergency medications.

students

If you have a classmate with epilepsy, who experiences seizures, the best thing you can do for them is be a friend.

Don't assume that you know what is going on with your classmate, and instead be there to help.

is my personal information shared?

The Epilepsy Foundation receives funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Epilepsy Foundation and the CDC want to ensure that we are reaching all populations with seizure education.

In accordance with CDC requirements, some personal demographic information (date of birth, income, race/ethnicity, gender, occupation, workplace information) is collected.

  • This demographic information is reported in aggregate to the CDC.
  • The information is not tied to individual identifiers (name, address, email, school info).
  • If participants do not want to share this information, please skip the question or choose "I prefer not to answer" in the relevant portion of the pre-assessment.
  • Note: when questions are skipped, the system will ask if the respondent would like to go back and answer the skipped question before they move to a new page. Please select either continue without answering or answer the question to proceed to the next page.

The Epilepsy Foundation will provide reports to the local Epilepsy Foundation office to include training date and participant information (name, address, email, workplace information.)  Only contact information is shared - no demographic information is shared with local offices of the Epilepsy Foundation.

For states who have mandated an epilepsy and seizure first aid training, the Epilepsy Foundation may be required to report to the state education agency. Information such as training date and participant name, address, email, or workplace information may be shared.
